Frequently Asked Questions
What are the requirements to obtain the CAIA designation?
In order to be awarded the CAIA designation candidates have to pass the level I and II exams and need to become a member of the CAIA Association. To qualify for membership in the CAIA Association candidates must pass the level II exam within three years of passing the level I exam, hold a US bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), and have more than one year of professional experience in the finance industry.
Am I enrolled for the CAIA exam after I have registered for the CfBS prep course?
No, in order to take the CAIA exam, you need to enroll directly with the CAIA Association. The enrollment form can be completed online at www.caia.org.
What is the format of the CAIA exam?
The CAIA exam consists of two levels. The examinations are offered semi-annually, giving the candidates the opportunity to complete the CAIA program within one year. The exams are computer-based (Pearson VUE testing centers around the world, e.g. in Zurich). The level I exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and lasts four hours. The level II exam is composed of 100 multiple-choice questions as well as three essay questions. The duration is four hours.
How can the prep course help me to pass the exam?
The prep course will teach you the most complex and frequently asked concepts and gives you a framework to structure your exam preparation. In addition to attending class you will need to put in rigourous study depending on your academic and professional background (approx. 150 to 200 hours for level I and approx. 200 hours or more for level II). We suggest that you take one week off before the exam to concentrate fully on your final preparation.
Which calculator is permitted for the exam?
The CAIA Association only allows the following two calculators at the exams: Hewlett Packard 12C (incl. the Platinum edition) and Texas Instruments BAII Plus (incl. the Professional model). Both calculators will be explained and used in the CfBS exam preparation courses.
